"저는 남아프리카공화국에 사는 61살의 헬렌 조지입니다. 요하네스버그에 있는 국제 석유회사 대표로 있습니다. 3년 전 남편이 먼저 세상을 떠나면서 자식이 없는 저는 남편이 남긴 1200만달러를 에티오피아·수단 등에 있는 고아들을 위해 기부하고자 합니다. 암으로 몇 개월 살지 못한다는 판정을 받은 저로서는 이 돈이 가치 있게 쓰이는 것이 마지막 바람입니다. 돈을 당신에게 드릴 테니 당신의 뜻대로 기부하길 바라며, 자선단체에 돈을 기부하면서 든 비용은 이 돈에서 변제하십시오. 답장을 기다리겠습니다."
\'황당한\' 내용의 이 편지는 수년 전부터 미국과 유럽 등지에서 유행하는 사기성 메일 \'나이지리아 편지\'의 일부다. 영어로 적힌 이런 사기 메일이 무작위로 뿌려지면서 이에 속아 피해를 본 사례도 등장하고 있다.
지방의 모 사립대 교수인 A씨는 지난달 자칭 아프리카 코트디부아르에 사는 시한부 암환자라는 여성한테서 남편의 유산 580만달러를 기부하고 싶다는 이메일을 받았다. 자신의 이메일 주소를 어떻게 알았느냐는 메일을 보내자 "기독교와 관련해 당신이 쓴 영어 칼럼을 인터넷에서 읽었다. 기부하기에 적합한 사람으로 생각했다"는 답변이 돌아왔다. 답장에는 580만달러 예탁증서까지 첨부돼 있었다. 상대방이 은행 및 법률 수속비 명목으로 4750달러를 요구했지만 A씨는 의심이 들어 돈을 보내지 않았다.
A씨는 "친구 중 한 명은 최근 나이지리아 장성 딸이 망명자금을 보낸다는 말에 속아 8만달러를 날렸다"며 "사기당하고 나서도 부끄러워 신고조차 못 하는 이들이 적지 않은 것으로 안다"고 전했다.
이 같은 사기성 메일은 1980∼90년대 나이지리아 출신 사기꾼이 영국과 미국 기업에 엉터리 사업안을 적은 편지와 팩스를 보내 선금을 가로챈 사건을 따 \'나이지리아 메일\'로 불리고 있다.
메일은 그럴싸한 이야기를 다양하게 늘어 놓는다. 시한부 암 환자가 몇 년 전 먼저 죽은 남편이 남긴 유산을 자선사업에 써줄 사람을 찾는가 하면, 자신을 콩고 군 장성의 아들로 소개하면서 아버지 재산을 투자하고 싶다며 도움을 요청하기도 한다. 거액 복권에 당첨됐으니 수수료를 내고 함께 찾자거나, 현재 정치적 핍박으로 감옥에 있는데 망명을 도와주면 사례하겠다는 내용 등이다.
자신이 은행 부행장인데 사망으로 거래가 중단된 고객 계좌에서 합법적으로 돈을 빼내기 위해서는 외국인이 돈을 받는 것처럼 꾸며야 한다면서 자기에게 신상정보를 알려주면 금액의 40%를 주겠다는 \'유혹\'도 있다. 대체로 이런 메일에 답장을 보내면 수수료나 변호사 비용 등이 필요하다면서 \'본색\'을 드러냈다.
미국의 인터넷범죄 불만접수센터(IC3)는 \'나이지리아 편지\'를 인터넷 범죄의 별도 항목으로 구분해 관리하고 있다. 미국 국무부는 2007년 2월 공식 경고 책자를 내기도 했다. 해외 네티즌들은 사이트를 만들어 메일 주소와 내용 등을 공유하면서 사기 방지에 나서고 있다.

주님의 일을 하기 위하여 하나님의 도우심을 간절히 바라는 이들에게는 이러한 메일이 주님이 이런식으로 기적을 베푸시는구나 하고 감사하며 저런 미끼를 덥석 물기 쉽상입니다. 이미 이런일로 사기를 당한 상당수의 교역자도 많은것으로 알고 있습니다.
지난번 극동방송 라디오를 듣다보니 미국의 어느 한인교회의 목사님도 이런일로 사기를 당해서 교회재건축비를 모두 다 날려서 상당한 시험에 들었었다고 하더군요.
